Sarah Anne Trinder was born in 1879 in the village of Shilton,Oxfordshire. She appears on the 1881 & 1891 census's for the village before moving to London to find work, there, she found work as a laundry maid, and this is confirmed on the 1901 census entry.
In 1904, Sarah married Henry John Mills, and in 1907, Harold Henry J Mills was born. This was then followed by Rosa May (1909) and then Henry J (1910).
This story is then written from the information received by Henry J Mills from Dr Barnados.
It is reported that Sarah's husband, Henry senior liked to drink and that he, on occasions beat her. Eventually, for one reason or another, she left leaving the children in his care.
Legally at that time, the father 'owned' the children, and to a very large extent
also owned his wife. Before 1880, the father also owned any money or property
left or given to her. If a woman 'abandoned' her cruel husband, she was
deemed to have offended and her children would not be restored to her -
not that most women could have supported them anyway.
The records then show that she moved to Brighton and made a new life for herself. No record can be found of her ever re-marrying.
Barnados report that Henry senior then died, leaving the children on their own, and not knowing of any other parent, the authorities took them into care.
Some how Sarah, heard of Henry's death, and returned to London to find her children, but by now Henry (junior) had been sent to North America, leaving his brother and sister behind.
Sarah, managed to claim Rosa and Harold but was too late to save Henry.
Henry grew up in America and made his home there following adoption, he always wondered about his brother's and sister's but never knew where to start looking for them. He married Nellie Pauline Nordquiet on Oct 31 1942 and they had 2 daughters and a son. Following his death in 1990, one of the daughters, Linda, decided to try and find her father's family.
With some of the information which Barnados had supplied, Linda managed to track down Sadie's mother in Shilton, and luckily for them Sadie was on hand to take the call that particular day.
That phone call started the search for missing family and also the new friendship of distant cousins.
When Linda and her husband Ray visited the U.K, both the couple and Sadie visited Brighton to search for any trace of where Sarah ended up and were unable to find any conclusive evidence. They have since employed the services of a professional researcher to try and track the missing family members down.
It has taken some time, but indications are that we are now very close to finding some descendants of Violet Maud Norval.
I will post more to this page as when new details become available.
