What better place to start, than with the origin of the name, so
where does the name Trinder come from? Well, there are numerous hearaldry sites that will all claim to know but I wonder how many of them would work out to be true? The name according to one source means something to do with wheel wrights another implies it has something to do with the wool trade. In the "The Dictionary Of Surnames" by Patrick Hanks & Flavia Hodges the origin is given as
Trinder English; occupational name for a braider or a
Trinder: Hugo le Trinder 1275 (Rotuli Hundredorum, 2 Vols, London, 1812, 1818.); John le Trendare 1278 Somerset Assize Rolls. A derivative of Old English trendan ' to turn round, roll'. As Middle English trend means 'to twist, plait' and tryndelle is a spindle, the surname probably denotes a braider.
One thing is for sure, Trinder's are all over the world now!
A league table below sets out the distribution throughout the counties in the 1881 census.
My particular branch comes from the small village of Shilton in Oxfordshire. I can trace them back to around 1780 on the parish records, although before that, they could have come from just about anywhere really. More work needed there! |
